Pennsylvania Governor breaks ground for the fourth largest solar power facility in USA

the Governor of Pennsylvania Edward G. Rendell has broken ground for USA’s fourth largest solar power facility. The facility likely to be completed by September or October this year. Upon completion, the solar plant will annually produce approximately 3,700 megawatt hours of power, which is enough to meet the energy requirements of approximately 400 homes in the Bucks County of Pennsylvania.

The $20 million project owned by EPURON – the Exelon-EPURON Solar Center with 16,500 solar panels will help in reducing emission of greenhouse gases that is equivalent to planting 33 acres of trees every year or eliminating 440 cars from the annual traffic. Pennsylvania has committed to reaching a solar capacity of more than 860 megawatts by 2021. With Exelon-EPURON solar center coming up with a 3-megawatt capacity project, further future investment in solar facilities are required in the state.

The other three power plants are:
1. Solar Energy Generating Systems, USA Mojave desert California, total of 354 MW, parabolic trough design. (Solar thermal power plant)
2. Nevada Solar One, USA Nevada, 64 MW, parabolic trough design (Solar thermal power plant)
3. Nellis Solar Power Plant the largest solar photovoltaic system in North America. 14 Megawatt array.

World’s largest PV powerplant Beneixama photovoltaic power plant is a 20 MW photovoltaic power plant located in Beneixama, Spain.

A large new Solar power station in Victoria Australia is planned. Solar Systems has announced the world’s most advanced 154 MW photovoltaic (PV) heliostat solar concentrator power station for north-western Victoria. The first stage is expected to be completed in 2010 with full commissioning due in 2013. (see how fast it can be implemented. Its not like stupid, money sucking nuclear plants. Olkiluoto plant is still not completed.)

A 40 MW solar power system using innovative thin film technology is also planed by Germany in Leipzig and should be finished by the end of 2009.
