Some facts about nuclear power plants

In 2002, 360 Gwe (Giga Watt Electrical) produced from nuclear energy in this world. It is 16 % of total production.

Spent uranium must be guarded for about 15000 years. Plutonium for 75000 – 100,000 years. Every year the world’s 442 nuclear power plants produce 12000 tones of radioactive waste. UK has 90 tones of plutonium waste. Disposing this costs about US $ 93 billion.

Cost of nuclear plant is 3 times of fossil fuel plants.

Completion takes 12 to 15 years blocking return on the capital investment.in fact, from blue print to electricity production stage it will take 25-30 years.

Rs 10,00,000 crores are spent on nuclear power infrastructure by Indian govt. the return is 3% electricity and massive waste of resource.

Capital cost at price level of 1997-98 nuclear plants would cost Rs 5.23 crores/MW and Rs 3.75 Crores/MW for thermal plants.

There are countries thinking about shutting down all their nuclear power plants. They call this as “Nuclear Phaseout”.
