Kerala govt is installing one million CFLs for below poverty line (BPL) families in 466 panchayats. One family get one CFL. The programme is inagurated by electricity minister AK Balan on 30/05/09. at Rajaji Nagar Thiruvandapuram. He replaced incandescent lamp in 4 family at Rajaji Nagar, Thiruvandapuram.
Installing one million CFLs can save 40 megawatt power. To produce this much energy it requires Rs 240 crore ruppies. This is a first move towards CFLs for all homes.
There is a plan to give 4 CFLs ar subsidies price of Rs 15/- for above poverty line families also in process. Govt will take 4 incandescent lamps from the homes.Bureau of Energy Efficiency of Central Govt will provide fund for this. By implementing this 300 Mega watt energy can be saved. This will save Rs 1800/- crore investment.
CFLs have 10 times life than incandescent lamps and saves power 1/5. But its initial cost making people to buy ordinary bulbs. Ordinary bulbs cost Rs 12/- where as CFLs costs Rs 100/-Ordinary bulb wastes 70% of the energy as heat. It can only use 10% of the total power.
