Water leak found outside nuclear reactors

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says an apparent water leak has been detected in a dike outside Dominion Virginia Power’s North Anna nuclear power plant.

The NRC this morning said the leak was discovered at 3:10 p.m. yesterday in a dike that provides isolation between Lake Anna and the North Anna Power Station.

Described in the NRC report as “minor seepage,“ the leak has not affected either of North Anna’s two nuclear reactors, both of which were operating at 100 percent of capacity today.

“Currently, there is no threat to the public or North Anna Power Station,“ the NRC’s report stated. “Engineering is investigating this issue and a corrective action plan will be developed to correct the minor seepage.“

The North Anna nuclear plant is in Louisa County, about 45 miles northwest of Richmond.
