Heavy rain that lashed the central districts of Kerala since Thursday(9/23/10) night, and which was continuing even late on Friday, has submerged several low-lying areas in the districts headquarters, apart from threatening to damage several hectares of ripe paddy crop in Kuttanad, Alappuzha district.
Maximum damage was reported from Cherthala, where submersion of this magnitude is being reported for the first time in the last two decades, leaving authorities perplexed whether a single night’s rain could cause so much damage, particularly when heavier rain was less troublesome. Alappuzha reported 14 cm of rain.
According to information collected from various sources, over 1,000 families (30,000 people) had to be evacuated and shifted to about 40 camps opened at different places, including Kuthiathode, Panavally, Pattanakad, Thycauttussery, Pallipuram and Kodanthuruth while the rising water-levels in the low-lying regions of the area, including Thuravur and Arookutty, could force more camps to be opened, officials said.
Six relief camps have been opened in Ernakulam district to accommodate families hit by the heavy rain in the district. Major road in Kochi town is under high water. The camps house 2,314 persons from 549 families. While Kunnathunadu, Aluva, Paravur, Kothamangalam, and Muvattupuzha taluks were hit by heavy rain and resultant inundation no damage was reported. Kochi retorted 18cm of rain.
