A transport ship carrying recycled nuclear fuel for Japanese power companies left the French port of Cherbourg for Japan Thursday.
The ship is loaded with 15 tons of uranium-plutonium mixed-oxide fuel, apparently containing around 1.3 tons of plutonium, according to a French radio station. Conservation group Greenpeace International has warned that it is dangerous to transport so-called MOX fuel by sea, saying it can be used to produce nuclear weapons.
This was the fourth shipment of MOX fuel by sea from France since 1999 with the last cargo dispatched to Japan in March last year.
