Drought In Somalia Causes Mass Influx Of Climate Refugees To Kenya
Aid group, Save the Children, is reporting the massive drought in Somalia has resulted in a mass influx of climate refugees fleeing for Kenya. The group estimates 800 Somali children cross into Kenya every day to escape the drought. The United Nations estimates the drought has impacted 10 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda.
193 Rhinos Killed in South Africa So Far This Year
2011 is shaping up to be one of the worst years on record for rhinos. Poachers in South Africa have already killed 193 of the animals in the first six month of this year alone — that’s according to conservation group WWF. This grim uptick in rhino killing puts 2011 on track to surmount last year’s record poaching rate. And although over 100 have been arrested, convictions remain staggeringly few as the problem continues to grow.
Oil spill in Yellowstone River in Montana
The spread of an estimated 1,000 barrels or 42,000 gallons of crude oil along the flooded banks of the Yellowstone River in Montana is becoming increasingly difficult to capture since an ExxonMobile pipeline ruptured late Friday night. The break in the pipe near Laurel, Mont., forced an immediate evacuation of about 140 people from the town to protect them from possible explosions and dangerous fumes.
