SEC Probes JPMorgan Chase for Bribery Allegations in China
The banking giant JPMorgan is under federal investigation for alleged bribery in China. The Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into whether JPMorgan hired the children of influential Chinese officials in order to win lucrative contracts. JPMorgan currently faces separate probes from eight federal agencies, one state regulator and two foreign governments.
Immokalee Workers Claim Victory with Trader Joes Deal
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has announced a major victory in reaching an agreement with the grocery chain Trader Joes ensuring humane working conditions for farmworkers harvesting tomatoes sold inside its stores. On Thursday, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers said Trader Joes had finally agreed to join the groups Fair Food Program after a lengthy public campaign that included protests in front of the chains locations. Before the deal, the farmworkers said their wages had remained stagnant since 1978, with tomato pickers having to put in 10-hour days just to make the minimum wage.
Global Malnutrition Kills 5 Children per Minute
A new report has found that malnutrition is a “hidden crisis” that kills five children around the world every minute. The group, Save the Children, says nearly half-a-billion children worldwide are at risk of permanent damage over the next 15 years from chronic malnutrition. The group also reports that malnutrition affects one-in-four children globally.
