Bangladeshi Workers Strike Grows, 250 Factories Closed
In Bangladesh, garment workers are continuing a massive protest against low wages at the factories producing cheap goods for Western firms. The protest has now led to the closures of 250 garment factories, up from 100 on Tuesday. Thousands of workers are taking part. More than 100 people were wounded today as striking workers clashed with police for a third consecutive day.
New York City to Raise Age for Buying Cigarettes to 21
The New York City Council has approved a measure raising the age for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged to sign the bill. New York is the first major city to take such action following similar measures in smaller municipalities. The council also approved setting a minimum price of $10.50 a pack for cigarettes.

Indonesia has recalled its ambassador to Australia in the latest diplomatic fallout to result from the leaks of Edward Snowden. Recent disclosures show the National Security Agency used Australia as part of its global spying operations. Australian intelligence agencies reportedly tried to tap the phone of Indonesia’s president and other top officials. Australian embassies across Asia were reportedly involved in a surveillance ring led by the United States.
