Vermont Set to Become 1st State to Require GMO Labeling

Vermont is poised to become the first state in the country to require labeling of genetically modified foods. Gov. Peter Shumlin has vowed to sign the bill passed by state lawmakers on Wednesday. The measure also bars foods with GMOs from being labeled as “natural.” The measure would take effect in July 2016. Connecticut and Maine have passed similar laws, but theirs have clauses that prevent them from going into effect until neighboring states require the labeling.

Killings of Environmental Activists Surge Worldwide

A new report says the killings of environmental activists defending land rights has surged over the past decade. The group Global Witness says 147 activists were killed in 2012, compared to 51 in 2002. The death rate is now an average of two per week. Brazil was the world’s deadliest country for environmental defenders, with 448 deaths between 2002 and 2013. Honduras was second with 109 deaths over the same period.

1 in 25 Death Row Prisoners Innocent

A new study says about one in 25 people sentenced to death in the United States is innocent. The National Academy of Sciences looked at data over three decades. According to the study, 340 people were wrongfully sentenced to die — more than double the number of death row prisoners exonerated over the same time period.
