Journalists and Politicians Condemn Censorship of teleSUR

A wide range of politicians, intellectuals and journalists strongly spoke out against the decision by the government of Mauricio Macri to effectively take regional news broadcaster teleSUR off the air in Argentina. As well as removing the country as a shareholder, Argentina will no longer allow teleSUR to operate on the over-the-air Open Digital Television service, ending the requirement that private cable packages include the news outlet. Argentine Nobel laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel, who sits on the advisory board of teleSUR, said Macri’s decision to try to eliminate teleSUR from Argentina’s airwaves was unsurprising given his ideological outlook.
