The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) held a meeting last Friday at the Free Word centre in London to mark World Press Freedom Day. The event was billed as “an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.” Despite the NUJ having a membership of 35,000, just 50 people turned up. Outside the meeting, around 30 supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange called for his freedom.
