Fake Aadhaar, PAN to secure loans worth Rs 1 crore

Assam Police have arrested Shoriful Islam, a fraudster, from Kolkata, for duping several financial institutions through identity theft using fake Aadhaar cards and phone numbers. Islam, a resident of Morigaon district in central Assam, has been identified as a key mastermind of cyber fraud in Morigaon district, had targeted leading private sector banks and other financial institutions that provided loans, according to police.

“He was cheating the banks and financial institutions by submitting fake Aadhaar cards and using fake mobile SIM cards,” Morigaon SP Hemanta Kumar Das told TOI, on Saturday. Investigating officials revealed that some PAN card numbers were linked with fake Aadhaar cards to deceive bank officials for loan approval.

Investigating officials said that Islam fraudulently obtained loan amounts of at least Rs one crore from financial institutions.

A senior official explained, “PAN number of some established businessmen from ‘outside’ the state, who have good cibil score, are collected by such fraudsters like Islam from some sources. Then, fake Aadhaar cards are made by the fraudsters with that PAN number in the name of that PAN card holder.
