A couple years ago we decided to try something a little unusual for city gardeners — growing our own wheat. The idea started mostly for fun, to see if it could be done on a small urban plot here in Vancouver. We dedicated a 10-by-20-foot section of our yard and planted winter wheat.
The wheat grew slowly in the cooler months and ripened through the summer and into the Fall. When harvest time arrived, we cut and bundled the stalks, then set out to thresh them the old-fashioned way — simply rubbing the heads between our hands to release the kernels.
The final step was milling the grain into flour, using a KitchenAid grain mill attachment. From the entire plot, we produced just about two kilograms — not a huge yield, but enough for a couple of loaves of bread.
