Why Preschool Teachers Struggle To Make Ends Meet

Teaching in general is not a lucrative profession, but pre-K teachers are paid much less than their counterparts in elementary school. The median salary for a preschool teacher is $28,120, according to 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, while the median salary for elementary school teachers is $56,830. And 34 percent of pre-K teachers rely on public support programs, compared to 13 percent of elementary school teachers, according to the UC Berkeley report. Despite this stark reality, Umfleet said many of her fellow pre-K teachers are afraid of speaking up about low pay for fear of losing their jobs.
