Keyboard not working on laptop

edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

on the kernel line append i8042.reset
eg:
kernel        /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=2946bc29-bb7c-466c-823e-86394c27eed3 ro quiet splash i8042.reset

Save and reboot the system.
