Over 400,000 Under Water Ban in Ohio; Toxic Algae Bloom Linked to Climate Change, Industrial Farming

Northwest Ohio is in the third day of a water ban affecting more than 400,000 people. The ban was ordered after tests showed high levels of a dangerous toxin in the water supply for Toledo and surrounding areas. The toxin, microcystin, causes skin rashes and can lead to liver damage. The high levels of the toxin microcystin are caused by blooming algae on Lake Erie. Several factors fuel algae increases, including an excess runoff of phosphorus from industrial farms that use excess fertilizer and adopt other poor practices. Climate change is also linked to algae blooms, with heavier rains and hotter temperatures causing an increased phosphorus runoff into the lake.

Qatar Stadium Workers Earn Just 76 Cents an Hour

Migrant workers building the first stadium for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup have been earning as little as 45p ($0.76) an hour, the Guardian can reveal. More than 100 workers from some of the world’s poorest countries are laboring in ferocious desert heat on the 40,000-seat al-Wakrah stadium, which has been designed by the British architect Zaha Hadid and is due to host a quarter-final. The pay rate appears to be in breach of the tournament organizers’ own worker welfare rules and comes despite the Gulf kingdom spending £134 billion ($226 billion) on infrastructure ahead of the competition.

5 Latin American Countries Recall Ambassadors to Israel over Gaza Assault

In Latin America, five countries — Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and El Salvador — have all recalled their ambassadors to Israel in protest of the offensive in Gaza. The presidents of Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela have issued a joint statement calling for Israel to end its “disproportionate use of force.” Bolivia has changed its policies to require Israelis entering the country to obtain a visa, and Bolivian President Evo Morales called Israel a “terrorist state.” Protests against Israel’s assault have erupted across Latin America and around the world.

  1. this is so wrong…ah yes…let’s go for a group that will kill homosexuals, allows no freedom of religion, teaches the young to hate and want to kill and die, shoots missiles from the midst of children, sends photos from years ago or from the Syrian deaths and purport that it is Gaza, and allow no photos to be taken of their militants as if they didn’t exist…but they are such good people…
