Google, FB silent Open Internet

Google Inc., once boastful that it was the leading defender of a free and open Internet, has gone into the shadows. Since the Federal Communications Commission proposed in May to let cable and telephone companies offer special Internet fast lanes for companies willing to pay extra, lobbyists for Google haven’t visited the agency to intervene, FCC records show. Facebook Inc. (FB:US), the largest social network, also has been absent.

Mega solar power project becomes operational in Thailand

SPCG Public Co Ltd and Kyocera Corp are the companies involved with the project which can generate enough electricity to provide for 287,500 Thai households. The plant will generate 345,000,000kWh annually. The project was started by SGPC while Kyocera was selected to supply solar modules. The plant has around 1.1 million solar panels and will supply electricity to the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand.

Over 400 Arrested in National Fast-Food Workers’ Strike for Living Wage, Unionization

More than 400 fast-food workers and their supporters have been arrested in a national day of action for a $15-an-hour minimum wage. Workers staged a one-day strike in 150 cities across the country Thursday, from Las Vegas to Chicago and Detroit, to Little Rock, Arkansas, and here in New York City. Those arrested engaged in nonviolent civil disobedience by blocking streets during rush hour. In addition to a living wage, workers are also seeking the right to unionize and improved workplace conditions, including consistent working hours.

That rate, 467 spills for the first 7 months of this year, suggests that the state will surpass last year’s record of 575, due to a surge in oil and gas development and more stringent reporting rules. Colorado now has about 52,000 active oil and gas wells, with much of the recent growth occurring along the populous Front Range north and northeast of Denver. Since 2010, about 21 percent of the nearly 2,500 reported spills have contaminated either ground or surface water.

Fast-food workers across the country are holding their latest mass strike today to call for higher wages and improved workplace conditions. Strikes and sit-ins are taking place at fast-food chains in around 150 cities to demand a $15-an-hour minimum wage, the right to organize, and an end to wage theft.
