U.S. Spent Millions on Social Security Benefits for Nazi War Crime Suspects

The United States has spent millions of dollars on Social Security benefits for suspected Nazi war criminals. An Associated Press investigation found the payments have continued under a legal loophole through which Nazis were persuaded to leave the United States in return for keeping their benefits. Surviving recipients of the taxpayer-funded benefits include Jakob Denzinger, a former Auschwitz guard now living in Croatia. On Monday, White House spokesperson Eric Schultz said the White House opposes the payments, but he did not outline any plans for ending them.

90-Year-Old Man Faces Jail Time for Feeding Homeless

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a 90-year-old man is facing potential jail time for serving food to the homeless. Arnold Abbott, known as Chef Arnold, has been cited twice in the past week after a city ordinance went into effect that bans feeding the poor. He described one of his encounters with police to a local news station. Arnold Abbott said: “One of the police officers came over and said, ‘Drop that plate, right now!’ as though I was carrying a weapon. These are the poorest of the poor. They have nothing. They don’t have a roof over their head. And who could turn them away?”
