The Coastal Karnataka Fishermen Action Committee has urged the State government to drop the Yettinahole project as diversion of water from the tributary of the Nethravati will hit the fisheries sector hard, according to Vasudeva Boloor, general secretary of the committee. He said that 62 associations of fishermen under the committee in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada had thrown their support to the agitation against the project.
Mr. Boloor said that rivers should carry rain water or storm water to the sea. Rain water brings food to the fish in the sea through river. The fish from the deep sea comes to the sea shore in search of food and it helps fishermen, especially those using country boats, to catch fish. “When rain water joins the sea, it will be warmer than the water in the deep sea. Hence it helps in breeding of fish. For example, as there was less rain this year fishermen using country boats did not earn much because of non-availability of fish in coast,” he said.
