Press reports claim that the indicted war criminal, General Wiranto, is set to be named Indonesia’s security chief by the country’s president, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). General Wiranto is under indictment by a UN-sponsored prosecutor for the massacre, rape, and arson campaign in occupied East Timor in 1999. Though forces under Wiranto’s command raped nuns and staged mass executions of civilians he has evaded arrest for 17 years and — if the press reports prove correct — will now be placed in overall charge of Indonesia’s vast security forces.
