A power unit of a nuclear power plant in southern Russia was shut down for repair on Sunday, said Russia’s state nuclear energy company Rosenergoatom.
“The first power unit at Volgodonsk nuclear power plant was shut down for maintenance at 9:20 a.m. local time (0620 GMT),” the company said in a statement.
Rosenergoatom said a leakage in the steam generator’s pipe system might have led to the repair and the work would last about four days.
It added that radiation levels at the plant and in the nearby area remained normal and in line with background radiation standards.
The Volgodonsk nuclear power plant, located some 1,000 km south of Moscow, went into operation in 2001 and has one pressurized water reactor.
