The world’s rarest and most threatened species of great apes

Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s rarest and most threatened species of great apes. Only 800 of the apes are believed to exist in the Batang Toru forest in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Their habitat is under threat from a massive Chinese-funded hydropower project being built in the area. Pre-construction activity for the 510-megawatt Batang Toru hydropower plant has already driven some of the orangutans out of the forest and into nearby plantations.
