The Kalyana Lakshmi-Shaadi Mubarak welfare schemes meant for providing financial assistance to the poor during marriages, is helping parents in Telangana marry off their daughters by fudging their age. Parents are resorting to changing the date of birth (DoB) in photocopies of Aadhaar cards of their daughters in order to avail themselves of Rs 1,00,116 under the scheme.
Moreover, the revenue department, the nodal agency to oversee the scheme, is not making any effort to check with UIDAI database and observe discrepancy in Aadhaar data provided, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has found. TISS says this has become rampant in Telangana. The Aadhaar Centre authorities are supposed to change the details only after the village revenue officer (VRO) gives his/her permission. But, that is not happening.
