China doubles wind power capacity every year
China’s total installed wind power capacity has doubled every year since 2005. Last year, it added 18,928 MW of wind power capacity. The country with the next most added was the U.S. with 5,115 MW added. In total, China has 44,733 MW installed, while the U.S. (2nd again) has 40,180 MW installed.
Husband-Wife Amazonian Activists Killed in Brazil
In Brazil, the murder of an Amazon environmental activist and his wife is being investigated as a possible assassination. José Claudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife, Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva, were shot to death late Monday in a rural area of the Amazonian state of Para. While details remain unclear, local police say the killings bear the signs of a murder for hire. A leader on a rural, sustainable reserve, Claudio Ribeiro da Silva was an outspoken and celebrated critic of illegal logging in the Amazon.
Extreme Rains, Heat Destroy 30 Percent Of California’s Cherry Crop
According to Jim Culbertson, executive manager of the California Cherry Advisory Board, about 30 percent of California’s cherry crop has been lost after nearly two inches of rain fell June 4-5 over the entire cherry growing region that had yet to be picked, followed by excessive heat.
