There is no open source, only free software and non free software. It doesn’t matter how much you are open or not. Half freedom is half slavery too.
Initially, nobody has plan for building a free operating system. Only Free software Foundation had that plan in 1983 named Gnu. Last piece they want was the kernel. Linus filled that gap in 1991 causing the release of first free software operating system named Gnu/Linux.
