Solar water heater on the White House roof

In 1979 Jimmy Carter had a solar water heater installed on the White House roof. It was a move designed to support Carter’s solar institute, which he had “created to spearhead solar innovation.” Unfortunately, once Ronald Reagan (who “viewed alternative energy with open scorn”) made it into office, the solar water heater was removed, the budget for the solar institute was slashed, and tax credits were allowed to expire (in 1985).

  1. I saw a lecture from Dr. Richard Komp in Freeport on Thursday November 20th, 2008, and he mentioned that the panels were given to Unity College in Unity Maine, where they remain today. They still work just fine.
